When I was a camgirl. I joined a forum for cam girls, cam models, you know people who masturbate for money on the internet. There, I learned a lot about the things I needed to do to protect myself from those with more nefarious purposes on their brains.

For example, when selling content, always get the money before sending it. This may just seem smart, but you'd be surprised what excuses some people will come up with and how many will fall for their manipulations.

Another thing we were encouraged to do was to copyright all images/videos we sold. The price of registering a copyright was about equal to selling one item. So, in order to protect ourselves, some of us copyrighted those images/videos that were high sellers. That was only about three for me, as I didn't do a lot of side hustling.

Whelp, long after I quit camming, I got an email from a former client. He saw my video on a website, not one of the big porn places or anything (most require a signed release and copy of the id of the people in the videos nowadays), but a little rinky dink nothing site that was shaming sex workers for doing their job.

Oh I filed a DMCA ( The Digital Millennium Copyright Act) take down notice alright. They sure weren't going to be using my content for their bullshit. And, while I was at it, I went back to the forum for camgirls and spilled the beans to my fellow creators bombarding the stupid little site with paperwork. Today, I got an email from the client who said the shamer's site was down. It seems they got one too many DMCAs to continue operating.

Many of us in the blogs did not grow up in the digital age and are unaware of copyright laws as they pertain to the internet. In 1998 Congress passed the DMCA amending copyright law to address the relationship between the internet and copyright protection. What this means is that if you use a piece of copyrighted material without permission, the owner of that copyright has the right to contact the platform where you used the material for it to be taken down.

You can't download and use images you find on bookface or other places without the permission of the photographer (or other copyright owner). Maybe you're thinking, others are downloading and sharing these photos/videos all the time so how can it be illegal? Just because lots of people do it doesn't make it legal. (I mean, look at speeding.) You can't take an image from bookface and reproduce it elsewhere unless you have permission or that use falls within an exception such as fair use.

Now, one can't sue the platform for what their users post thanks to Prop 230. But, it's also true that some websites don't want to deal with a slew of DMCA take down notices. It's hours of labor they have to do or to pay someone to take care of. That particular website was one of those who didn't want to deal with that and just stopped operating altogether.

BlackSexMatch.com has their own thoughts on copyright as evidenced by their Terms of Service which says:

12. Your Conduct.    You further agree not to use the Services to:

(f)   upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights of any person;

Unfortunately, though, as we all know, BlackSexMatch.com rarely enforces their own TOS. It's been a problem for as long as I can remember. I mean, the TOS (Terms of Service) also says:

12. Your Conduct.    You further agree not to use the Services to:
(a)   upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful (e.g., prostitution), harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

Yet, ask any woman on here who has said no to someone through email, I'm sure they have at least one story of a person being threatening and downright abusive. When one reports this to BlackSexMatch.com, nothing happens.

Shoot, I saw a blog the other day where one member was threatening to k ill a whole group of people whose ideology he didn't like. I know I hit the report button on that, but the threats remain.

There's also this whole private mailbox fiasco that I've read about all over the blogs. People reading others' private interactions which is obviously an invasion of one's privacy.

Finally, my partner walked by while I was on the BlackSexMatch.com Recent Blog List the other day and literally asked, “They allow bes tiality on there?” incredulously. It took me a minute and a conversation to decipher what he was referring to, but eventually I saw his point. Which was, text is interpreted by the reader and he understood it as speaking of bes tiality and others may too.

One has to wonder, given that this new community is on the horizon and @Andrew is claiming to bring the “love” back to the blogs, if these changes are also going to include consequences for those who break TOS.

My suspicion is no.

But, maybe I'll be surprised.

I suspect that Andrew's "bring the love back" will be about as effective as the Texas Governors promise to stop all r**e so exceptions to a certain law are not needed.

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

Copyrighting is always a big subject of discussion in my photography club. The way I understand it (in over simplified terms) is "if you snapped the shutter, you own the copyright", but registering it is another matter. MOST of the semi-pros in the club watermark their images and then just consider it free advertising if someone steals it to post elsewhere.

EnigmaInitiative replies on 12/26/2021 9:54 am:
I did not know that you need not register the copyright, and I suspect neither did those I spoke to on the forum did either.

Most pros, I suspect, don't want to go through the hassle of taking down their pictures, it's a lot of bullshit paperwork. And, I also suspect it has to do with the context in which it's used for some.

Like, I have to wonder if some of your semi pro friends would be happy if some corporation cropped out the watermark and used their picture to sell something unseemly. Ya know?

Great post!
It's too bad those who daily (often multiple times) break copyright laws on here may not read this, pause and rethink their actions. We can hope the 'new and improved' community will live up to the hype.

I have been watching this whole thing play out on here. I could almost write a book about what goes on within the cam sites. I moderated rooms since way back before tokens existed and have about seen it all. DMCA works but there are still people who work around it, screen capping andposting broadcasts etc.. I only moderate (babysit) a few camgirls these days, not like in the past where it was nearly a full time job. Pictures posted on here could easilly be tracked and these people who spam major blog posts of images all day are just asking for trouble. The only way that they are getting away with it is that the blogs here are kind of tucked away on the corner of the internet. Sooner or later the images shared that are incripted with trackers will catch up with them. It's just a matter of time. If I post images here, I make sure they are clean and not digitally encripted with trackers etc... Like I say, sooner or later the mega image sharers just may get caught....

EnigmaInitiative replies on 12/26/2021 9:59 am:
We should write the book together.

I, too, used to moderate for some of the camgirls after I quit camming myself. I was also kind of like a house mom to some when they needed a shoulder. But, I stopped after the start of our nonprofit. Things just got too busy for me.

Back when I was camming, I knew shit of content id systems. Shoot, I still barely know anything. But, I do believe it's only a matter of time before professional managing agencies will realize that this site is making money off of their materials.

I could be wrong but I thought, at least here in the UK, that using images for personal blogs etc are allowed unless expressly forbidden.

EnigmaInitiative replies on 12/26/2021 10:01 am:
I can't speak to UK law in any way, shape, or form. Shoot, I only know a surface level of the DMCA which is US law. However, this site is based in the US and subject to its laws.

That said, there are stock photo sites that are royalty free on the internet if you're looking for an image. Ones that can be used for personal blog purposes, or anything really.

Just google Royalty free images or stock photos, there are tons that show up.

Anyone who believes that what they post will be private is uninformed. It might be illegal, but people do it, as you've noted. Further, hackers get ahold of information and propagate it across the internet, or worse, use it for extortion. I will not post a nude of me with my face, nor will I post a face pic here, at all. If I hope to meet then I will send it direct to the potential date via cell phone.

EnigmaInitiative replies on 12/26/2021 10:04 am:
As I said earlier, text is interpreted by the reader, and you've interpreted mine differently than what I intended.

No bother, your point is taken.

That said, if you think sending a pic through text message is private, you're uninformed.

I worked as a photographer for a lot of years, and it used to really bother me when I'd find my own photos re-posted on forums, as a derivative part of someone else's work, or even with other people's copyrights watermarked on them. I've spent a lot of effort over the last few years doing everything I can to remove images that I own the rights to off other people's websites and forums, and often the effort isn't worth it.

As a result, I no longer share any digital copies of media I create. It's too bad.

I feel like your story is a a big win for content creators, though. Congrats!

EnigmaInitiative replies on 12/26/2021 10:22 am:
It is sad that's it's so cumbersome for content creators to keep control of the media they create. I'm sorry you no longer share yours because of it.

You also have these fools who will happily crop out or manipulate the image so that the watermark can't be seen.

I've found some of my videos on other sites over the years and did nothing, the site I refer to in my story just pissed me the fuck off.

A lot of people seem to think that because an image is "on the internet" it is free for commercial use. Same goes for videos and music too. But that's obviously not the case.

Like you say, it is difficult for the owner of the material to keep track of and control where their work is used. And it is probably just as difficult to get something removed that shouldn't be there. Plus proving to the site that you are the real owner/creator of that material.

Content id systems are becoming much more popular nowadays, I suspect it won't be too long before BlackSexMatch.com gets hit with a slew of DMCA takedowns. Especially with them separating the dating site from the community.

But, I could be wrong.

one the active bloggers sent me a text that my private mail box was open for full view... i couldn't quickly just delete the few messages and deleted the entire post. then i found out i had to also delete the post in community.

i try as much as possible to use my own content graphics.
sometimes i use random internet images.
but it does unnerve me when someone reposts my personal photos.
i am off IG and just share my photos with a few friends on the bookface.
which, yes, i know is not fully private.

Memes are a different beast altogether and were meant to be shared over and over again, I have doubts that there's any copyright protection for them.

That it is my friend, that it is.

Content id systems are becoming a thing, though. Who knows what tomorrow will bring for the content creator, maybe one day it'll be like the music industry who slams anyone with takedowns that reproduces their copyrighted material without permission.

Oh you're probably right, lonly, they are making far too much money off of stolen content to do anything about it.

It saddens me that so many are willing to just ignore theft like it's nothing. I wonder if we were to find out that some of those images were of a minor how we'd feel? Or, maybe a victim of sex trafficking? Because we sure can't be positive that some of them aren't since the people posting the pics certainly aren't checking for ids or provenance and neither is this site.

As someone who has had their content stolen, I find the apathy displayed in the responses here disheartening. And, disagree that there's nothing we can do but ignore it.

Have a good day.

And, that's your choice to make, I obviously made a different choice.

Risk assessment is personal. I don't care if people find out I posed naked, my family already knows I'm a camgirl, and I run a non profit with my partner who knows I was a camgirl.

Privacy was not my concern, control of my content is.
