When Is It Too Much

Too much of anything can turn into an addiction. The word β€œaddiction” suggests gambling, drinking, and drugs. But there are other habits, behaviours, and even beauty products that are surprisingly addictive. Here are a few you may not be aware of.

Lip Balm
Have you ever sat with a friend and watched as he or she applied and then reapplied lip balm repeatedly? There's actually a scientific reason for it. The ingredients in some products can end up being super drying, which prompts you to feel the need to keep reapplying in a vicious cycle. The person can also be very used to the textural feeling on his or her lips so when they don't have the product on, they feel that something is missing. I know people like this. Do you?

Teeth Whitening
It’s one thing to use whitening strips regularly to remove red wine and coffee stains. It’s quite another to be addicted to bleaching your teeth. There’s even a term for it: Bleachorexia refers to being addicted to bleaching teeth. Overuse or misuse of whitening products such as lasers, strips, gels, rinses, or pastes can cause noticeable sensitivity, tooth pain, gum irritation, and weakened enamel, often temporary, but sometimes more permanent. At worst, teeth begin to demineralize with time, since whitening products strip tooth enamel resulting in transparent-looking teeth. Never tried it and know I never will.

Eating Dirt and Other Non-Edible Items
An addiction to eating dirt and other items that are not edible is pica This is actually a common addictive disorder in those with autism or other developmental delays but can be seen in people with iron deficiency anemia (consuming ice or sand). Eating non-edible items can sometimes lead to choking or poisonings. Some people even consume soap or laundry detergent. I hadn't heard of this until I did my recent post on Word Power

Exercise
Exercise addiction is well established in the scientific literature and usually means that your day isn’t complete unless you’ve gotten in a run, hit the gym, or hopped on a bike. Exercise addicts tend to use exercise as a coping strategy to control emotions. Sometimes anorexics do this to control their weight

Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery can quickly become an addiction for some. Patients seeking Botox often start out wanting to look β€˜natural’. Once they see how Botox smooths out fine lines and relaxes deep furrows, they notice small lines when they make expressions, and they want those gone too. Pretty soon, if the physician lets them, the β€˜natural’ look becomes frozen. Other common β€œaddictions” include facial fillers, especially in the lips and cheeks, and liposuction. β€œProcedural β€˜addicts’ are usually unaware of their addiction and most often need to be turned away by their plastic surgeon. I don't know anyone personally who is like this but have you ever seen the show Botched?.

Tattoos
With 45M Americans said to have at least one tattoo and of that, 32% say they’re addicted, the question is why? Addiction is psychosomatic. If you imagine that tattoos can change people’s perception of you, you can believe that a new image on your skin will impress others, boost your self-esteem, and eliminate the need for more needlework. I often heard, once you get one, you can't stop there

Pulling Your Hair
The clinical term for this is trichotillomania and it’s when someone can’t stop twisting or pulling their hair out. It often doesn’t just stop with the hair on the head, either. Some people will pull the hair on their eyebrows or even eyelashes as a compulsive urge or mindless habit, such as when they are zoned out watching TV. I have known people who do this and it's so distracting when trying to have a conversation with them.

Sex
Whether you enjoy having sex (and therefore feel like you need to have a lot of it) or can’t stop looking at porn, you may have hypersexual disorder The disorder also means your brain is hardwired similar to someone who has a gambling or drug addiction, making it difficult to give up that behaviour. There is a lot of debate about whether sex addiction is real. What do you think?

Is there something that you simply cannot resist? Is it controlling your life?

Many things we do is obsessive, it might not be drugs, or alcohol, or gambling, be it's something else and WE ALL are addicts!

Great information I do argue the point on hypersexual disorder, I myself don’t compare my wanting great sex to gambling just saying

Many years ago I had an extremely stressful and exhausting job. I started having trouble sleeping which lead to a 6 month OTC sleep pill addiction.

My BFF noticed the changes in my personality. Stopped the pills cold turkey and have been very careful with any sleep aids.

Do you have any Primal Urges ... I do, please CUMHANDLEME and explore some of my naughty and nice Primal ... Urges with me !!!

(sexual addiction)

I really like sex, if I could, I would like to have sex at least once a day.
Back in college I had a particular GF, her and I would have sex 5 times a day.
That was just normal for us.
*morning before school (5am), noontime/lunch, before work (2-3pm), after work (10pm), and somewhere in the middle of the night.*

After her, everyone else prefers to have sexy maybe once a day or at worst once a week, and that eventually became difficult for me. I would need to either play with myself or watch porn. Either way I needed to reach climax at least once a day.

Not sure if I'm an addict though.

people use the word addiction lightly and to mean many things. As someone who was once married to an addict both during his active years and then recovery only to watch him relapse again, I would say the dividing point between addiction and compulsion would be a compulsion to engage in behaviour that causes harm to others.

Tattoos? I have one, never had desire to get another.

None of these addictions surprise me and I am glad I don't have any of them. It really is amazing though how so many people can become addicted to things you never even thought about being an addiction.

Thanks for the great read this morning, and I hope you enjoy a Terrific Tuesday..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

An interesting perspective. I am not sure many will agree. I was amazed at the long list (too many to include here) of strange addictions that some people have.

The intent was not to compare, it was to suggest and point there are different types of addictions.

Hmmmm, really? Breathing is a necessity. I know people who are 'chocoholics'. They have to have some form of chocolate every day.

Wow! That sounds difficult to have gone through. My Mother quit smoking cold turkey and the side effects were difficult and lasted about 6 months. Then she became an ardent 'anti-smoking' advocate and my Father was relegated to having to smoke outside!

I have heard other stories of how quickly some sleep aids can become addictive. You are fortunate that your BFF recognized the issues and alerted you so you could take steps to 'kick the habit'. Thank you for dropping by and sharing your story.

There is a BIG difference between really liking something and being addicted to it! Merriam-Webster defines addiction as a compulsive, chronic, physiological or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behaviour, or activity having harmful physical, psychological, or social effects and typically causing well-defined symptoms (such as anxiety, irritability, tremors, or nausea) upon withdrawal or abstinence: the state of being addicted. Only you can decide if you identify with this definition. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and definition. with regard to tattoos, I personally, don't have any, despite having thought about it many times. Every person I know started out thinking they would just get 1 tattoo and every one of them did not stop at 1. I don't know why, it just is.

Obviously and addictive personality here - smoked for almost 59 years and drank enough to end up in AA. I don't do a lot of gambling but I do enjoy an occasional outing to the track to bet the horses and and I do enjoy almost all things sexual. But I don't think I'd consider myself sexual or gambling addictied.

Not sure about sexual addiction but I have known a lot of men and women that have ruined their marriages because they can't keep their knickers on.

It is sad when marriages are ruined because a partner doesn’t respect the sanctity of the vows.
